Updating your theme
Install and review a theme update without changing the live storefront first.

Update in a safe draft copy
Keep the current live theme as a fallback. Install or duplicate the updated theme as an unpublished copy, then review it before publishing.
Read the update notes
Review the release notes so you know which features or layouts have changed.
Prepare the draft copy
Add the updated theme as an unpublished copy. Do not replace the live theme while you are still checking it.
Restore merchant content
Review settings, menus, app blocks, and any merchant-added custom content in the updated copy. Re-add only what the store still needs.
Publish when ready
Complete the Before publishing guide, then publish the reviewed copy. Keep the previous live theme available until you are comfortable with the update.
